St. John the Baptist offers an honors math class for eligible students starting in grade 7. Eligibility for the rigorous program is determined by a combination of the UC Berkeley MDTP Pre-Algebra readiness test at the end of sixth grade, teacher recommendation and evaluation of grade 6 classroom performance and homework completion  in mathematics.

The curriculum we use is CPM College Preparatory Mathematics. The text for grade 7 is Making Connections, Foundations for Algebra, Course 2, Volumes 1 and 2. For grade 8, the text is Algebra Connections, Volume 1 and 2.

Visit the CPM website at www.cpm.org to get more information about the supports available to students, parents and teachers. There is a video introduction to the CPM materials and there is also considerable information about the research base of CPM courses and the approach to learning they employ.

Classes meet daily, Monday through Friday, in the Math/Science room. Eighth grade students complete the curriculum for Algebra in their eighth grade year.

Mrs. Milani began teaching in 1991 after completing her credential at Mills College mid-career Math and Science Credential Program.  After graduating from UC Berkeley, she had worked in the food and pharmaceutical industries for 13 years before getting her teaching credential.

Mrs. Milani has been teaching in the Honors Math program since she came to St. John’s in 2006.

As a hobby, Mrs. Milani has studied working with silver, bronze and copper and she makes jewelry and small sculptures from these metals.
