Teaching Assistant: Mrs. Gloria Maltagliati
Welcome to St. John the Baptist Kindergarten classroom.
You and your child are just beginning a wonderful journey that will carry you through the next 13 years. I am very excited to be a part of the first leg of that journey. I hope that this first year of Kindergarten will be an exciting and pleasant year for you and your child.
My goals for this year can be synthesized into one all encompassing wish: For your child to leave my class with a love for learning. I am looking forward to working with you and your child and encourage you to please come and visit the Kindergarten class. Your presence is always welcome.
Thank you for your support. God bless you and your family.
Sincerely, Mrs. Rodena Tan-Torres (Mrs. T)
Kindergarten Curriculum
Religion: The children will come to learn and see the presence of God all around them. They will be able to recognize His amazing power and presence in all aspects of their lives. This discovery is made through the help of the text titled “This Is Our Faith” published by Silver Burdett Ginn.
There are several ways your child’s learning will be put into practice. The first is daily prayer. As a class, we will pray before meals and before we leave each day. Second, we will attend the school masses on the first Friday of each month. Finally, we will participate individually as a class to help raise money for the children of Haiti and we will do community outreach programs.
Reading/ Language Arts: Children will be able to identify and write the letters of the alphabet. They will learn the consonants and short and long vowel sounds. The children will listen to stories and directions, recognize color, words and shapes. They will begin to develop listening and comprehension skills. Also, identification of words in simple sentences and the difference between an asking and telling sentence will be accomplished. These foundations will enable them to enter first grade with the skills necessary to take on reading.
Science: This year they will learn about “wood and paper” using Foss Kits developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science. . They will also learn about plants, animals, texture, weights, evaporation, senses, shapes and sizes. They do hands on experiments to enhance the learning experience and sharpen their basic skills.
Math: The children will sort objects according to size, shape and color. They will be able to make simple and complex patterns. With the aid of manipulatives, the children will count, add and subtract various objects, and graph items. They will also begin to learn about time and money. The children will become familiar with numbers from 1-100, counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. The concept of measurements and geometry will also be introduced.
Social Studies: The children will become aware of themselves as part of the group and learn about their community.
Art: The children will learn about and explore color through drawing, painting, cutting, and gluing using a variety of materials.
